This Month’s Jams! (July 2022)
It has been a busy month at the studio! I’ve been fortunate to be working on some very fun mixing projects and even a couple film projects. On the listening side of things I have been on a pop kick. And if we’re talking pop albums with great production and mixing, these three definitely hold up.
Maroon 5 - Songs About Jane
I think a lot of people forget about this album and this band in general. Now they are known as the super produced pop group, but their first record is a funky jam! It feels like a band in a room and Adam Levine’s vocals are as good as it gets. The drum tones are very early 2000s in the best way. Short piccolo snares and punchy kicks all over the place.
Florence & The Machine - Dance Fever
Always a good year when there is a new Flo record! Dance Fever features all of the layers, harmonies, and effects one would expect to hear on her records. The percussion is especially well done with lots of layers and very cool lifts throughout. This record is a little less electronic than past releases and features string sections and horn sections quite frequently. The vocals are always so crystal clear on her albums and recorded extremely well.
Harry Styles - Fine Line
Harry Styles, Aaron Sterling, and Spike Stent?!? Come on this was always going to be a hit. Aaron Sterling does a wonderful job providing an infectious groove that supports and compliments all the other layers and programming. Sonically, I think this record is near perfect. Spike Stent does an excellent job managing a ton of stacked vocals, instrumental parts, and what I would imagine are extremely dense sessions. The harmonies on this record are the perfect blend between harmony and gang vocals and you can’t help but sing along.
