The Mixing Process Explained: What to Expect When Working with Drum Arsenal Productions
Welcome, I’m Christian Dorn, and I run Drum Arsenal Productions. I’ve had the pleasure of mixing tracks for artists across various genres, and I know how important it is for your music to sound just right. When you work with me, I want you to feel confident and excited about the mixing process. Here’s what you can expect when you bring your project to my studio.
1. Initial Consultation: Understanding Your Vision
First things first—I want to get to know you and your music. Every project is unique, and this initial consultation is where you can share your vision with me. Whether you’re an artist, producer, or songwriter, I’m here to listen. Tell me about the vibe you’re going for, any reference tracks you have in mind, and any specific ideas or techniques you’re interested in. Communication is key here; the more I know about your goals, the better I can bring them to life.
2. Track Preparation: Getting Everything Ready
Before I dive into mixing, I’ll spend some time prepping your tracks. This means organizing and cleaning up audio files, consolidating tracks, and setting up the session so that everything flows smoothly. I want to make sure that we start off on the right foot, with a solid foundation. If you need any edits—like tuning or timing adjustments—just let me know, and I’ll take care of it. Unlike many mix engineers, I don’t charge by the hour or nickel and dime clients on editing that NEEDS to happen.
3. First Mix Pass: Bringing Your Song to Life
Now, for the fun part: mixing! I’ll start crafting the mix, focusing on balance, depth, and clarity. I aim to make each element shine while preserving the overall vibe of the track. With KH 310 monitors and a lot of other very specific gear, I get a full, rich sound, especially in the low end, which is crucial for dense tracks. I love this stage because it’s where the song really starts to take shape, and I can bring your artistic vision to life.
4. Revisions: Fine-Tuning the Details
After I complete the first mix, I’ll send it over for you to review. This is your chance to provide feedback. I’m here to make sure you’re 100% satisfied, so don’t hold back on any tweaks or adjustments you’d like. Whether it’s volume changes, EQ adjustments, or other tweaks, I’ll get the mix to a point that is exactly how you want it.
5. Final Delivery: Ready for Release
Once you’re happy with the mix, I’ll prepare the final files for delivery in the formats you need, whether it’s for streaming, CD, or vinyl. If you’d like to work with a dedicated mastering engineer, I can handle that coordination. But if you’d prefer, I can also master the track myself to give you a streamlined, all-in-one experience. My whole goal is to take the mystery out of this process and provide you with the options that best fir your music, your goals, and your budget.
